The PreTenors:

An Evening of Operatic Comedy with a Cavalcade of Stars

Saturday October 18, 2014
8 PM
$42 + 2.50 Facility Fee

The PreTenors are making a return engagement with their unique brand of Operatic Comedy.

The show consists of some of the greatest operatic arias of all time (Nessun Dorma, La Donna Mobile and Torna a Surriento to name a few) as well as some more modern fare as they venture into Broadway, Pop and a taste of classics from the silver screen.

The Operatic Comedy of The PreTenors is in the send-up of the three larger-than-life personalities: Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras.

Pavarotti becomes “Paparazzi”, a man of huge ego and appetites who conducts the evening’s festivities and has an inexhaustible supply of food items that magically appear and are consumed mid-song. Kieran Martin Murphy is the one tasked with bringing this larger-than-life personality to the stage.

Domingo transforms into “Placebo Domingo”, a man who is impeccably manicured and believes he is not only the greatest of tenors, but the most handsome as well.

Carreras simply changes to “Whocarras”, the third and almost completely forgotten tenor who is constantly trying to prove his worth to the other two, and tries desperately to get their attention. St. Albert performer Trent Worthington brings his charm to this character.

The PreTenors have been performing together for 18 years and their hugely popular show has travelled across North America and has sold out at numerous Edmonton Fringe Festivals. Also gracing the stage alongside them will be some of their ‘celebrity’ friends. You never know who will stop by…Mick Jagger? Bryan Adams? Patsy Cline? Dolly Parton? You won’t know 'til you’re there.

Discover the power of literature and storytelling as award-winning author, Yann Martel discusses his book, and subsequent Oscar-winning movie, Life of Pi, his latest novel, Beatrice and Virgil, as well as his letter writing campaign to Stephen Harper.

STARFest Facts

Life of Pi

Yann Martel was born in Spain of peripatetic French-Canadian parents. He grew up in Alaska, British Columbia, Costa Rica, France, Ontario and Mexico, and has continued travelling as an adult. After studying philosophy and while doing odd jobs – tree planter, dishwasher, security guard – he began to write. His first book, The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios, was a short story collection which won the Journey Prize; his second novel, Self, was a fictional autobiography.

Life of Pi, adapted as a play and later for film, was shortlisted for a Governor General’s Award and won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction. The story of an Indian teenager stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with a tiger and other animals was a resounding success, making Martel an internationally recognized author.

Martel’s third novel, Beatrice and Virgil, was published in 2010. His most recent work is 101 Letters to a Prime Minister: The Complete Letters to Stephen Harper.
